Author Interview: Valarie Kinney

Today I would like to welcome author Valarie Kinney, author of Slither.

Natasha: Tell me about yourself. How long have you been writing? When you are not writing, how do you like to spend your spare time?

Valarie: I used to write a lot in high school, then I put it away for a time after I was married and had children. I started writing seriously again about five years ago. I’m married with four children, so I spend a lot of time with family. We enjoy camping and hanging out at Renaissance Faires. I also like to crochet and am a voracious reader.

Natasha: Tell us a little about your book. What was your favorite scene to write? What was your least favorite scene?

Valarie: Slither is about a woman trying to free herself from a family that pledges fealty to a snake god by feeding from innocents. Just as she begins to think she is free, they show up to drag her back, threatening her husband’s life in the process.
My favorite scene to write was about a child named Kayde. The entire scene was so clear in my mind, and it was delightfully bizzare to write.

My least favorite scene, as cliché as it probably sounds, was the final one. I’d spent so much time with Emmett and Zari talking in my head, I was sad to see them go.

Natasha: Do you have any other exciting projects coming out?

Valarie: I have two stories coming out this winter in anthologies by 7DS books. One is a super heroine, and one is a super chick villain.

Natasha Do you have any advice for other writers trying to get published?

Valarie: Publishing a book had long been a dream of mine. I even had a manuscript sitting on a flash drive, ready to go. There were so many reasons I didn’t do it. Then my sister died, at the far too young age of 49. And when I realized how easily my time could be gone, it ripped away so much of my fear. Life is short. Write your book.
